We need a living wage
CCI Action Fund members continue to fight to increase the state’s minimum wage.Starting in early September, a team of canvassers and volunteers knocked on thousands of doors to spread the message about raising the minimum wage and how it related to the upcoming election. We heard many stories from people who work hard but aren’t getting paid the wages they deserve. One thing was clear – there is overwhelming public support to raise the minimum wage. Our legislators are currently debating this important issue.Rep. Bruce Hunter of Des Moines introduced HF 71 - a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 (by 2017) with annual cost of living adjustments after that. The Senate Democrats want a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $8.75 with no indexing. Yes, you’re seeing that correctly. Senate Dems refuse to fight for working families.According to the Iowa Policy Project, a single person in Iowa needs to make at least $12 hour to make ends meet. A single parent with two children would need to make over $26 an hour to make ends meet. Raising the wage now would help 306,000 Iowa families, according to their figures.Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 is already a compromise. We need our legislators to stand up for everyday people and pass a $10.10 wage increase this session; and then come back and fight for a living wage for all workers. Contact your legislators and tell them to pass a bill that gives dignity to workers – tell them we need a living wage.
