Republicans introduce bill to dismantle same day voter registration
Iowa CCI Action Fund members today called out a proposal to repeal Iowa’s same day voter registration – one of the great election laws we have in Iowa.A group of House Republicans (Representatives Salmon, Heartstill, Gassman, Branhagen, Holt, Kooiker) introduced a bill (House File 138) that would end same day registration in Iowa Monday.Same day registration was enacted in 2007, and since then has been an integral reason why Iowa is rated amongst the highest of states voting systems in the country.According to the Secretary of State’s website – 66,289 Iowans used same day registration to be able to cast their vote in the 2012 presidential election. http://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/2012/general/edr.pdf“Across the country we have seen attacks on our fundamental right to vote. This is a blatant partisan attack designed to suppress votes. We need to continue to push for ways to bring more people into our election system like universal voter registration and reinstating felon voting rights; not make it harder for people to vote.” said Barb Kalbach, the CCI Action Fund Board President and a 4th generation family farmer and Nurse from Dexter, IACCI Action is calling on Iowa legislators to stand up to this partisan attack and work to implement policies that bring more people into our voting system.
