Horrific cases of racial profiling are making national news, and we’re seeing local cases in Iowa. It’s impossible to ignore that we need to do something so people of color are treated with dignity, respect and fairness.

Thirty states already have laws on the books – this legislation is long overdue in Iowa.

CCI Action members have been working with Rep. Bruce Hunter and other legislators to make sure a strong racial profiling bill is introduced.

Some key elements to this bill include but are not limited to:

  • A citizen review board – this board is independent of the police so there is a fair look at police complaints
  • Body cameras
  • Requires data collection of traffic stops and data analysis of those stops
  • Requires written consent to search a person’s car
  • Ability to levy penalties for individuals charged with racial profiling

Why are we collecting stories?

Stories are an important part of organizing campaigns and get to the hearts and minds of the public and legislators. We know instances of racial profiling aren’t because of a few bad apples. It’s a systemic problem – and stories help prove that point. There’s also other things we can do to help find justice for folks who have been racially profiled.
