DES MOINES, IA – Hundreds of members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (CCI) gathered downtown on Saturday to participate in CCI’s 2019 annual convention, The People’s Voice. The convention brought together existing and new members to hear from an all-female panel discussion. Leaders in caregiving, anti-factory farms, climate, and racial justice discussed the importance of these issues and offered ways people can take action and deepen our grassroots activism. “We must rely on people, not politicians and corporations, to make a positive change,” said Varshini Prakash, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement. “During the Great Depression one year saw two million people protest and 400,000 workers strike for a day or more. Legislative Update for February 22, 2019

Things are picking up at the Iowa Statehouse. Bills are being introduced (over 100 on Thursday alone), sub-committees and committees are starting to meet, discuss, and debate, and groups are holding their lobby days (see our “Attend an Event” section below). Our bill establishing a single-payer healthcare system for Iowa was introduced (House File 96)! Here are a few more GOOD bills that caught our eye this week: Establishing a “Crude-Oil Fee” on pipelines (like DAPL) to help cover the costs of future spills (House File 44);Establishing Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for food (House File 58);Getting rid of Iowa’s (Steve King’s) “English Only” law (House File 70) and introducing an Iowa Dream Act (House File 101);Several bills expanding voting (electronic registration, automatic registration, vote-by-mail, and restoring voting rights);Repealing Iowa’s pre-emption of local wage and worker ordinances...

CCI Action members meet w/ Representative Braley

CCI Action members met with Congressman Bruce Braley over the August recess when our elected officials are home in their communities before returning to Washington after the Labor Day weekend.

We urged him to stand strong on People First issues like Social Security, raising revenue from Wall Street and the need to pass fair and comprehensive immigration reform.
