The People First Iowa Agenda

We've released our “People First Iowa” 2014 Legislative Agenda. Transformational policy proposals include local control of factory farms, raising the minimum wage, closing corporate tax loopholes, universal voter registration, and publicly-financed elections.

Members unanimously approved the community organization’s 2014 People First Iowa agenda legislative agenda during a statewide strategy session December 7 attended by dozens of key CCI Action Fund leaders from across Iowa.   The full text of the document may be read here."Our ‘People First Iowa’ agenda is a transformational economic, environmental, and electoral platform to help build a more just and democratic Iowa where the common good comes before corporate greed,” said Barb Kalbach, a fourth-generation family farmer from Dexter, Iowa and the CCI Action Fund Board president.Members say their “People First Iowa” agenda is the product of years of community organizing with thousands of everyday people and hardworking families across the state on bread and butter issues like factory farm pollution, predatory payday lending, and wage-theft - and also prioritizes other fundamental, big-ticket issues like taxes and the state budget.“We want to make life a lot better for a lot more people, and Governor Branstad and his corporate lobby allies with the Iowa Farm Bureau and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry are the roadblocks standing in the way of good government that puts people first,” Kalbach added.“2014 is an election year, and the legislative session is round one of a fight over the future of the state of Iowa that will play out all the way through November.  The stakes couldn’t be higher, and the time is now for bold vision and bold action.”Iowa CCI Action Fund members say they will mobilize hundreds of everyday Iowans to push the “People First Iowa” agenda during the 2014 legislative session and will have a citizen lobby team up at the statehouse nearly every day of the session to put a human face on the issues that matter most.
