Kicking off the legislative session
More than 200 everyday Iowans joined us at the Statehouse on January 14th to kick off the legislative session right at A People First Iowa: 2014 Rally and Lobby Day and deliver our own powerful message countering Branstad's corporate agenda; the time is now to put people first in Iowa! Here's a snapshot of what we did:
- We "welcomed" Governor Branstad to his annual Condition of the State Address. Everyday Iowans lined the halls shoulder-to-shoulder - where chants of Put People First! rang louder than Branstad's speech. Branstad was there to tell Iowans "Iowa is working"; we were there, hundreds strong, to ask Branstad - working for who?
- Met face-to-face with key legislators and committee chairs to push for our people-first vision for Iowa - an Iowa where the minimum wage is liveable, corporations pay their fair share, clean water is the norm, and government works for us.
- The day wrapped up with an exciting forum with Democrat gubernatorial candidate Jack Hatch; members held his feet to the fire to ensure we've got a candidate that understands the fight against factory farms and for clean water.
Check out photos from the day here, a review of the day as told by attendees here, and statewide press coverage and a powerful video here. We'll be sure to keep you updated as the legislative session warms up; the stakes are high, but we're geared up to fight for the Iowa we want to see.
