House Ag Should Vote No On Bad Factory Farm De-Regulation Bill

Members Call on House Agriculture Committee to Vote No on HF2110

Bill would reduce training time required of manure applicators, on the heels of a record-breaking number of manure spills in 2013

In advance of today, February 12th, committee vote on House File 2110, a bill that would reduce the annual training time required of commercial manure applicators, members called on legislators to vote against the bill.“Many of the 76 recorded manure spills last year occurred while transporting manure so it’s clear that manure applicators need more training, not less,” said Jim Yungclas, member and former County ISU Extension Director.Last year’s number of manure spills represented a 46% increase over the previous year.  Iowa Department of Natural Resources records show Iowa has 630 polluted waterways and there have been more than 600 manure spills in the last ten years.“Cutting the amount of annual training by a third not only ensures that more manure will end up in our water, it sends the wrong message that the legislature is not serious about cracking down on factory farm polluters,” said Yungclas.HF2110 was introduced by Representative Jarad Klein (R-Keota). Klein owns 20,000 hogs in confinement in various locations around Washington County.
