2013 Legislative Session Adjourned

The dust continues to settle, even though the 2013 legislative session is long over. This fall, we'll continue to build momentum looking towards the 2014 legislative session. We had our work cut out for us during the 2013 session, but together we stopped the worst of the worst, all the while pushing for powerful victories. You can continue to celebrate winning several hard-fought victories that move our “put people first priorities” forward. In 2013, you helped secure important wins like:

  • Increased funding for up to seven new factory farm field inspectors at the Department of Natural Resources.
  • Expanding Medicaid to give 150,000 low-wage Iowans access to affordable health insurance, many for the first time.
  • Expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit for low income working Iowans.
  • Granting Drivers Licenses to Undocumented Youth (DREAMers) who qualify for Deferred Action.
  • Removing factory farm shrill Craig Lang from the Board of Regents and passing the Regents Accountability and Transparency Act through the Iowa Senate, 49-1.
  • Holding two public hearings for Voter-owned Iowa Clean Elections at the Statehouse.
  • Stopping nearly a dozen bad factory farm de-regulation bills, and other bad bills like Voter ID.

Our greatest victory of all - we win every time we step into the public arena and challenge corporate power. But we know there's more work to do.The next big step: Door-Knocking for Clean Water September 28th: Whether you’re a canvassing pro or this is your first time, join us for a fun day of talking to area constituents about clean water and their Senator Joe Seng’s (D – Davenport) record on the issue. Check out the details here: http://cciaction.org/events/59/door-knocking-for-clean-water/Today, the state of Iowa is better off because of your continued support.P.S. Our power lies in people. The best way to help build a Statewide movement to "put people first" is to recruit strong fighters to put people before profits, politics, and polluters.
