Legislature moves to lower minimum wage increases
2/8/17 (Updated 2/16/17)This morning, a House Local Government subcommitee met to discuss HF 295 (formerly HSB 92), a bill that would prohibit counties and cities from having local control in employment matters, including establishing a minimum wage.If enacted, HF 295 would lower wages for over 100,000 Iowans and take away local control from cities and counties. After years of inaction by the legislature, four Iowa counties took it upon themselves to raise the minimum wage for their constituents. Now, legislators want to take that away, and prevent communities from ever doing it again. They’re trying to push these bills through as fast as possible, with as little public input as possible. Will you:
- Join us tomorrow for the Local Government Committee meeting. They will vote on HF 295 and we want to show strong opposition to the bill. The meeting starts at 3:00 p.m. in room 19. We’ll meet in the Capitol cafeteria at 2:30 p.m.
- Call Rep. Jake Highfill (R – Johnston) at 515-681-2621 – Chair of the Local Government committee and tell him:
- Bury the preemption bill – meaning don’t let it come up for a vote
- Don’t lower the minimum wage for thousands of Iowans – including YOUR constituents and…
- Raise the minimum wage to a living wage!
Let us know how the call went – we want to get at least 30 calls made! Please let us know if you can join us. Let’s show them Iowans need a living wage!
