Don't default on the American people

CCI Action Fund members delivered an important message to Representative Tom Latham today - end the government shutdown and don't default on the American people!A dozen members filled the Des Moines office of Rep. Latham and shared their deep concerns over governing based off of an extreme minority faction within the Republican Party. Our points mirror those of many everyday Americans, and they are:

  • We need to stop governing crisis to crisis. We need to open the government, raise the debt ceiling and pass a budget that increases revenue and invests in America.
  •  We don’t need more cuts, we need real solutions. The only way to break this cycle of governing by crisis is to add more revenue. It’s time to put a tax on Wall Street, close corporate tax loopholes, and make the rich and corporations contribute.
  • As a nation, we are suffering from a death by a thousand cuts. Every day Washington fails to act more and more people are losing their homes, going hungry, and slipping into poverty.
  • We demand an end to shutdowns, sequesters, and brutal cuts to services: it’s time to fund America, not break it.

Following our visit with Rep. Latham's staff, members met with the executive director of the Iowa Democratic Party to urge him to deliver a message to President Obama that he must stand on the side of the American people during these budget negotiations, and that we will not tolerate any cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid in exchange for Congress to simply do their job - govern in the interest of We the People. You can read our letters to both Rep. Latham and President Obama here and here.CCI Action Fund members support a fully-funded federal budget that puts communities before corporations and people before profits, politics, and polluters while preserving and strengthening Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for future generations.
