CCI Action members demand Governor Branstad expand Medicaid
CCI Action converges on Terrace Hill, demand Branstad cease his political grandstanding and embrace affordable health insurance for 150,000 Iowans
[Des Moines, IA] – Over 30 members of Iowa CCI Action Fund protested at the steps of the Governor’s mansion today calling on him to drop his opposition to the federally funded Medicaid expansion and direct the legislature to act on legislation to implement the provision of the Affordable Care Act to provide access to affordable health insurance to millions of low-income Americans, nearly 150,000 here in Iowa.“Governor Branstad is sitting in his ivory tower completely out of touch with the realities faced by hard-working Iowans,” said CCI Action member Cherie Mortice from Des Moines. “He really must not care about everyday Iowans because he is putting thousands of Iowans at risk by refusing them access to affordable health coverage.”The group held a brief speak-out highlighting everyday Iowans’ stories of the need to expand Medicaid, referencing the over 100 public comments submitted to the House of Representatives from Iowans across the state wanting expansion. The letter they delivered along with the comments demanded he embrace Medicaid expansion and personally reach out to every Iowan who weighed in on the debate to explain to them why he was denying them affordable health insurance coverage.CCI Action members vowed to keep pressuring the Governor and lawmakers to enact Medicaid expansion this session, and will be holding public events to highlight the issue on May 15 in Waterloo and May 18 in Clear Lake, as well as here in Des Moines.
