State DREAM Act Introduced

Bill to grant in-state tuition rates for children of undocumented immigrants comes during a national debate on comprehensive immigration reform

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (CCI Action Fund) members say the state of Iowa has an opportunity to do its part for comprehensive immigration reform by debating and passing a state DREAM Act bill to grant in-state tuition rates to the children of undocumented immigrants.

Senator Joe Bolkcom (D-Iowa City) and three democratic co-sponsors introduced Senate File 80 STATE DREAM ACT January 29.

After drivers licenses for deferred action immigrants comes in-state tuition rates for eligible students,” said Ana Belen Mancebo, a CCI Action Fund member from Des Moines.  “The state of Iowa has a golden opportunity to do its part to make life more just and democratic for hardworking immigrant families.”

The Iowa House of Representatives passed a state DREAM Act in 2004 with bipartisan support.
