Leading Presidential Candidates Answer Questions from Largest Progressive Organization in Iowa, Revealing New Insights into Positions on Top Caucus Issues

Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg responded in depth to Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund’s questions on Agriculture, Racial Justice, and Healthcare ahead of their September 21st Presidential Forum

Des Moines, IA – The top-polling presidential candidates’ answers to questions posed by the largest progressive organization in Iowa, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (CCI Action) were publicly released today on cciactioniowa2020.org. The answers to the questionnaire provide the most comprehensive issue guide yet from and for Iowa voters, revealing new information on the candidates’ positions on the topics that are most important to Iowa Caucus voters.

Nine presidential candidates responded to the questionnaire, including four of the top five polling candidates in Iowa: Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg. Joe Biden received the questionnaire and his team’s request for an extension was granted, but Biden failed to respond to the questionnaire.

The results revealed in the newly released questionnaire include:

  • Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro, are in favor of a factory farm moratorium.
  • Sanders, Warren, and Inslee all support a return to the New Deal system of guaranteed price floors and supply management which would dramatically change rural economies and make family farming economically viable again.

Racial Profiling:

  • Sanders, Warren, and Castro support the proposed ban on racial profiling in Des Moines, while Harris and Buttigieg did not.

  • SF 481 essentially prohibits cities in Iowa from becoming sanctuary cities. Warren, Sanders, Castro, and Buttigieg are in favor of repeal of SF 481.

The questionnaire also features in-depth discussions of health care, climate change, higher education, labor, and movement politics.

CCI Action is the c4 sister organization of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, a community-based organizing institution for 44 years. It’s the largest organized, progressive constituency in Iowa with more than 5,100 dues-paying members in every county and a universe of about 15,000 people who have taken action with us in the last three years.

There is no other community-based organization, labor union, or advocacy group in Iowa with CCI Action’s reach or depth of engagement. In the context of a caucus where only 170,000 people participated in 2016, and such a crowded field polling so close to one another, this questionnaire, and CCI Action’s overall endorsement process and caucus engagement, will shape the caucus race.

This questionnaire is the first step of a rigorous endorsement process. Next comes a Presidential Forum on September 21st with over 2,000 activists and caucus voters. The top polling candidates who completed the questionnaire will be invited to engage in an in-depth conversation with CCI Action members in front of one of the largest audiences of the caucus season.

The Iowa Presidential Forum is being planned with People’s Action as part of a series of forums with partners in early voting states New Hampshire, Michigan, and Nevada. This questionnaire and the forum will be the first in a series of events that will shape the early stage of presidential voting in Iowa, and nationally.  You can find more information at https://peoplesaction.org/peoples-presidential-forums/.
