Latham sponsors bill to “let” Americans keep their overpriced coverage

In a press release Friday, Congressman Tom Latham (R – IA 3) touts his sponsorship of H.R. 3350, the “Keep Your Health Plan Act”.

Without going into details of the bill, Latham’s press release implies that the bill would allow Americans to keep their current health insurance plan, referencing that millions of Americans have or will be receiving cancellation notices in the coming weeks from their carriers.

CCI Action Fund members blasted the bill and Congressman Latham, noting that a vast majority of the plans being cancelled offer inadequate coverage under the terms of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or discriminate based on pre-existing conditions – let alone the fact that many insurers often cancel their members’ policies throughout the year and enroll them in other policies available.

Tom Latham is once again being disingenuous with everyday Iowans and the American people with his sponsorship of this bill. It has been well documented that this was a common practice of insurers long before the ACA came about, and that with new plans offered through the marketplace exchanges consumers are getting better coverage than their previous and often expensive plans.

“If Tom Latham was truly motivated to represent his constituents and move this country forward, he wouldn’t have stood beside John Boehner during the government shutdown that cost Iowa tens of millions of dollars, and if he wants to actually make a difference in the lives of his constituents he would co-sponsor H.R. 3118, a bill that would expand and strengthen Social Security for all Americans. Or he would co-sponsor H.R. 15, a fair and comprehensive immigration reform proposal with bipartisan support. Instead he seems more interested in political grandstanding through measures like H.R. 3350 rather than serious proposals to move our economy and country forward.” –Matthew Covington, CCI Organizer
