Latham, King cast vote for the 1%, big corporations

Iowa’s Republican Congressmen joined nearly all House Republicans on passing Ryan budget

(Des Moines, IA)—House Republicans today approved a budget that punishes the poor and middle-class in order to ensure massive tax breaks for the wealthy. Cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, Head Start and the Social Security Administration are but a few of the programs slashed in order to finance a giant hand out to the 1%.

“Ryan’s budget is a direct path to poverty for a vast majority of everyday people,” said Matthew Covington, Community Organizer with CCI Action Fund.  “Congressmen Latham and King just voted against millions of children, retirees and low-income Americans in order to funnel trillions to the pockets of the 1%.”

The Ryan budget would cut taxes by about $4.3 trillion over the next 10 years, with the majority going to corporations and those who make more than $200,000 a year. To finance this, the plan slashes essential programs like WIC, Medicaid, Pell Grants and housing vouchers.

Ryan’s budget also threatens the future of Social Security and Medicare, which will affect millions of Americans. The budget will slash Social Security benefits for middle-class seniors and people with disabilities. And it will wholesale change Medicare into a voucher system, making it more costly for anyone who participates.
