What we’re fighting for this legislative session

The legislative session is here.

So is the time for us to lead a powerful “People & Planet First” statewide resistance and fight back because the issues we care about most will be under attack.

This is not the time to sit on the sidelines.

We see plenty of opportunities to put our issues, our values, and our vision for the Iowa we want to see front and center this legislative session.

We must have an active presence at the Statehouse, in the press, and in local legislative districts to disrupt and derail bad legislative measures. And, we must use those spaces to advance a powerful, populist, “people first” agenda.

CCI Action Legislative Priorities:

  • Water is Life. We need agricultural, environmental, and climate justice. We must put people and planet before profits and polluters – for us, for our kids, for our grandkids. Say no more to Big Oil export pipelines and corporate ag. We need mandatory regulations – not voluntary. Make the polluters pay, not tax payers – they dump it, we drink it, we won’t stop until they clean it up.
  • Living wages are good for workers, families, business and our communities – Raise our antiquated minimum wage to a living wage of at least $15/hr, and let municipalities pass higher wages if they want. No wage preemption.
  • Democracy needs more people involved not less – we need Universal Voter Registration, not Voter ID disenfranchisement. Everybody in, nobody out. Get big money out of politics through publicly financed elections with small dollar contributions.
  • We must stand for racial justice. No racism, no hate- Stop feeding the prison industrial complex – make racial profiling illegal in Iowa, and stop new attacks on people of color in the form of “Stand your ground” legislation and deputizing police to act as ICE agents.
