Get involved with upcoming election strategy in Iowa!

The stakes of the 2020 presidential election are huge. We all know that.  But the stakes of the 2022 elections in Iowa are going to be just as important – and may have even more effect on our every day lives. The way to build an Iowa beyond profits, pollution, and police violence is simple and CCI members have been doing it for decades: organize everyday people around real issues, and do it for the long haul. As our tables get longer and the bills pile up, our wages aren’t keeping up. As the pandemic rages on, as the economic crisis threatens our ability to afford rent, and police attacks on our communities continue, it has become clear that Gov. Reynolds’s profit-centric agenda is the foundation of the Iowa Republican party. This crisis has hit home for my family, too. Last week my mom went to the hospital for emergency surgery. She got two dozen staples in her stomach and is doing alot better now. While she’s recovering at the hospital,...

Find a legislative forum in your area

Throughout the session, usually on Saturdays, state legislators hold short meetings (or “coffees”) with constituents in their home districts. This is an important space to engage with your legislator face-to-face, raise up issues important to you, and call on them to stand on the side of the people.

Iowa CCI Action Endorses Bernie Sanders in the 2020 race

Our vision of changing business-as-usual politics starts and stops with people and our planet. That’s movement politics – bringing real people, our issues and our solutions into the center of our political system. We believe that our health, our water, and our climate are too important to be compromised for profit. We’re ready for a candidate who believes the same to be in the fight with us. Recently we’ve seen more and more candidates from the local to national level who challenge the political and economic establishment and support bold progressive solutions to the issues we face every day. Some 2020 Presidential candidates have been embracing or acknowledging movement politics. But only one of them has been doing it for decades, just like Iowa CCI Action and our sister organization Iowa CCI. That’s why Iowa CCI Action is endorsing Bernie Sanders. We’re standing with Bernie because Bernie stands with us. This wasn’t a decision...

CCI Action Fund endorses Chelsea Chism-Vargas, Jack Hatch in Des Moines races

Two months ago, CCI Action members in Des Moines sent out a questionnaire to 16 candidates running for city council and mayor.  Six of those candidates were invited for screenings based on their responses and after a lot of discussion and careful consideration from our endorsement team, recommendations were made to endorse the candidates that best aligned with CCI Action Fund’s issues. Now, we are prepping to get our feet in the street to support the movement candidates endorsed by CCI Action Fund! In the Des Moines Ward 4 race, CCI Action Fund is endorsing Chelsea Chism-Vargas over incumbent Joe Gatto (who did not return the questionnaire). Chelsea is a proud lifelong Southsider and CCI Action member who has been taking on racial and immigrant issues (amongst other issues), and knows what it will take to challenge corporate power in Des Moines.  In the race for Mayor of Des Moines, CCI Action Fund is proud to endorse Jack Hatch over incumbent Frank...

Ai-jen Poo and Mary Kay Henry to speak at Iowa People’s Presidential Forum

By Iris Olivares Right now, Iowans have an enormous amount of power to shape the direction of the future. A lot of people are depending on us Iowans to push the political field to meet the urgency of the moment, including immigrants, young people, workers, women, and people of color. I belong to all of those categories. My undocumented parents brought me to the US when I was eight months old, and Iowa is the only home that I’ve known. I applied to DACA when I was 16, and that’s why I was able to get a job providing long term care to clients in need.My goal was to go to school and become a nurse, but I couldn’t accept the grants I got to go to college because of my legal status. I was caught in a low-paying job that was high stress for me and for my clients and their families who struggled to pay for care. That’s why I’m so excited to announce that two of the country’s most important movement leaders, Mary Kay Henry, the President of SEIU, the largest...
