We won!

Last night, CCI Action endorsed candidates Indira Sheumaker (Des Moines Ward 1) and Ross Grooters (Pleasant Hill At Large) both won their seats for city council. After three months of registering new voters and calling residents to turn out to the polls, CCI Action held 1,440 conversations with residents. Our ability to impact elections and lift up our issues is only possible through the resolute work of our volunteers – thank you! Our candidates’ campaigns and our conversations with voters centered on issues: Public safety and racial justice solutions that invests in our communities instead of police,The municipalization of utilities for a healthy environment and climate,Affordable housing for all, andA government and economy run by the people and our needs instead of corporate power. Last night affirms what we’ve known for a long time: when people with our vision and values run as candidates and we turn voters out to vote on our issues, we win. But we also...

Phone bank with us to impact change in Des Moines

Join us on Zoom Mondays and Thursdays! (& election day) CCI Action members believe in doing politics differently. For us, that means bringing real people, our issues, and our solutions into the center of our political system and electing our people to office. We endorsed Des Moines City Council Ward 1 Candidate Indira Sheumaker because she is aligned with our vision for Des Moines and our belief of doing politics differently. The November 2nd local election provides us an opportunity to do just that in our capital city: prioritize people before the profits of big developers, polluters of our rivers, and police violence. To make that Des Moines a reality and inspire other communities, we have to reach out to more residents and move them to vote.  Join us for a phone bank shift to help us get out the vote and elect a movement candidate:  These calls make a critical difference! It’s important to connect, have an opportunity to let folks in our...

Join us for election analysis and actions Nov. 3 – 7

Updated 11/6/2020 Together, we must demand that our election officials protect our sacred right to vote and take the time to count every ballot. We have to stick together to ensure that voters decide the winners of this election and no one else. Iowa CCI Action has joined Democracy Defenders Iowa—a broad coalition of groups committed to standing up, speaking out, and protecting our democracy ahead of, during, and after the election. The people can prevail, but it’s up to us. No system or process can save us. November 7 – Prepared to Mobilize – Voters Decide Rallies SAVE THIS DATE! In America, our elections are decided by voters, not by fiat or decree. Everyone’s vote must be counted. Attempts to selectively stop some votes from being counted is disgusting and unAmerican – and must be met with massive pushback. This isn’t a moment to “wait and see.” We have to raise our voices. We can’t let Trump cheat his way out of losing. We...

DES MOINES, IA – Hundreds of members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (CCI) gathered downtown on Saturday to participate in CCI’s 2019 annual convention, The People’s Voice. The convention brought together existing and new members to hear from an all-female panel discussion. Leaders in caregiving, anti-factory farms, climate, and racial justice discussed the importance of these issues and offered ways people can take action and deepen our grassroots activism. “We must rely on people, not politicians and corporations, to make a positive change,” said Varshini Prakash, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement. “During the Great Depression one year saw two million people protest and 400,000 workers strike for a day or more. We need that kind of social...

Weekly updated for July 8, 2019

In last Monday’s email, we asked you to spend time reflecting on why you do the movement work you do. I had some time to do that myself and was reminded that there are two sides to every coin.As we celebrated independence, we also must recognize the land we live on is stolen land, unceded by indigenous people. As many of us enjoyed a little extra time off for the 4th of July, many more people did not. We recognize this country was built on slavery and exploitation of immigrant labor, and that a handful of very wealthy individuals continues to profit off the labor of poor and working class people. And even as we celebrate the US Women’s Soccer victory, we also must recognize the gender-based systemic oppressions that show up in their story and in the stories of other women and gender nonconforming people, including pay inequity, and unpaid labor. So we are called to this work for many reasons and we recognize that all our struggles are linked. We take...
